Overnight Crème Brûlée French Toast

Overnight Crème Brûlée French Toast

Image from here

This is my Christmas morning brunch go to recipe. It's so rich and full of calories that it makes it a holiday only recipe.

Ingredients:
  • 1 stick of butter, unsalted (1/2 cup)
  • 1 cup of brown sugar, packed tight
  • 1 large loaf of Chalah bread ( about 1lb, can be substitute for croissants or other breads)
  • 8 eggs
  • 1 1/4 cups of milk
  • 1 1/4 cups of fresh cream
  • 1 tbsp of vanilla
  • 1/4 tsp of salt
  • 1 tsp Grand Marnier or Triple Sec or Cointreau
Directions:
In a saucepan cook the butter and brown sugar over moderate heat, stirring constantly, until smooth. Pour the mixture into a glass Pyrex or other baking dish, about 12 by 8 in size.

Cut the bread into cubes about 1" in size. Add all the bread on top of sugar mixture and press lightly.

In a medium bowl whisk together the eggs, milk, cream, vanilla, Grand Marnier and salt until combined well and pour over the bread. Cover the casserole and refrigerate overnight.

Preheat oven to 350 F and bring bread to room temperature.

Bake the casserole, uncovered, in middle of oven until golden, about 35 to 40 minutes.

Serve with fresh fruit and your favorite syrup.

Suggested Products:

I have this Pyrex baking set, I love it has a cover. Makes it so easy to cover, bake and transport.

This is my go to vanilla, Nielsen-Massey's Vanilla Bourbon, for any recipe. It tastes just like the caviar of the vanilla bean but at a fraction of the cost.

Books I read 2012

In between reading all of Dr. Seuss books to the twinkies, these are the books I have read this year:
  1. Divergent  - Rated 5/5. Loved it. It's in the same vein as the Hunger Games.
  2. Insurgent - Rated 4/5. The sequel to Divergent. Not as good as the first one.
  3. Life as I Blow it  - Rated 1/5. Bad. Bad.
  4. Fifty Shades of Grey Trilogy - Rated 3/5. It's porn on paper, but it's the love story that does for women.
  5. Buying Time - Rated 2/5. It was free from Amazon. It was alright.
  6. These is My Words - Rated 4/5.
  7. Always the Designer, Never the Bride  - Rated 1/5. Free from amazon.
  8. Bared to You - Rated 2/5. In the same style as 50 Shade of Grey. A total mess, I had a headache after each chapter.
  9. Tess of the D'Ubervilles - Currently reading it. So far it's great. There's a film version of this book coming out with Frida Pinto, Trishna
  10. Gabriel's Inferno - Rated 4/5.
  11. The Shut Mouth Society - Rated 3/5.
To be read:

Reading The Cat in the Hat.

The Twins first Easter!

The Thursday before Easter we visited the Easter bunny:
They did really well! Isabel's dress was her godmother's dress from the 80's, she looked adorable in it. It was also the first time she wore a dress.

On Easter day:

Their basket from D and I:

Baby Stuff, the first 4 months.

Babies are a lot of work and have lots of needs! Obviously before they were born I knew all the stuff I needed! Ha! How wrong I was. So much stuff is useless or not needed. At the same time there are a lot of items that I depend on everyday.

Stuff I love and could not live without:

  • Chicco Keyfit 30 Carseats
  • Diapers - Seventh Generation are by far my favorite diapers. Earth's Best are a second favorite.   I emailed Seventh Generation and Earths Best about coupons, and they both sent me stuff. So nice of them! A bunch of friends brought diapers when they visited the babies, Huggies and Pampers. Huggies are actually pretty good, if I stop thinking about the chemicals in it. Pampers were terrible, so many leaks and blowouts.

  • Wipes - Earth's Best wipes are my favorite and then Seventh Generation. The less chemically filed wipes are much thinner than regular wipes, it's really gross when I wipe a big messy diaper. I have used a lot of Huggies Pure and Natural because I bought a box of 1200 at Costco.
  • Bottles - My favorites are the Born Free glass bottles. Dr Brown's glass bottles are pretty good too. At daycare they do not allow any glass, so I got Born Free regular plastic bottles. I strongly distrust plastic, but I dont have any other option.
  • Bottles brush and drying rack. I wash bottles once a day, with two babies it really takes a lot of space. I have a OXO brush, its great because it stands up and dries on it's own. At first I only had a rack, the Boon Grass, it's cute enough to keep out on the counter. But I would run out of space all the time. I had to buy a second one, so I got the Munchkin Sprout rack. And this is what my crazy life looks like:
  • Pump - The Medela Pump in Style. If it wasn't for the pump the twins would have been on formula only since the beginning. A hands free bra is a must! I was bored out of my mind before I got it, I would just sit in chair, holding the pump, counting down the seconds. With it, I can sit here and type this blog entry. I have heard of making your own with an old sports bra. I know me, I would ruin a sports bra and still not have a bra for the pump.
  • Carter's footed PJs. That's all the twins wore for the first few months. It was so hard for me to keep up with their basic necessities during day, all by myself, that I wouldn't even put him in regular clothes. Now that we have a little routine/schedule I try to get them dressed every morning before we go downstairs for the day.
So much more stuff that I use constantly! I just can't think of it right now.

Life with twins, so far....

Life with twins is amazing.

The first 2 weeks were really tough. After 2 weeks D went back to work and I was alone with 2 newborns. I was sleep deprived. Completely inexperienced with anything baby related. Breastfeeding was not going well. I was stuck in a part of my house all day. I actually cried, a lot. But I made it, they made it, we are all healthy and happy.

Breastfeeding, yeah that didn't go so well...I only nursed my baby boy once in the NICU when he was 2 days old. From that day on he did not know how to latch or suck, he just got used to the bottle and that was the end of it. With my baby girl I tried to breastfeed, I tried to learn everything I could from the consultants and nurses at the hospital. I tried all the tricks I could. And I just couldn't do it anymore. I was in hell. If I hadn't stopped breastfeeding, Isabel's first words would have been motherfucker, shit and cocksucker. So I started pumping and bottle feeding them. I was already doing it with Samuel. After a while I wasn't producing enough milk and I had to supplement with formula. I felt like such a shithead. I felt like I had failed my babies by giving them formula. They on the other hand dont seem to notice the difference between breast milk or formula, they just drink it all up. Recently I have started nursing Samuel more, it started out of laziness, but he has good latch now, and I just do it when he needs comforting. I have also breastfed Isabel since I started pumping, she still has a bad latch, but once in a while, for comfort, I will endure the pain.

When they were about 3 and half months the twins went to sleep in their nursery. For right now they are sharing a crib. Shortly after going to their room Isabel started sleeping through the night. Samuel wakes up once for a bottle. But they are doing awesome.

D and I have actually managed to get some grown up time. We went to a dinner with his boss, a birthday party for a friend, a wedding and to the movies to watch The Hunger Games. My mom, mother in law and brother and girlfriend have all been great with helping us with the babies.

The dreaded baby weight, for me being pregnant was a great weight loss method. I only gained 9 pounds during the whole pregnancy. Two weeks postpartum I was down 26 pounds of my pre pregnancy weight. The hormones from pregnancy cured my PCOS temporarily. My weight is still down, but my unfortunately the PCOS is back already. I have no idea what to do long term to cure it. I know that our family is complete and there are no more babies in the future for us.

The generosity of people, our friends and family, but also complete strangers like my mom's coworkers, has been insane! So many people have sent the twins gifts. D and I are so incredibly thankful to everyone. This is just the stuff they got in the first couple of weeks, plus money and gift cards.

My friends really surprised me too. The people that came to visit us at the hospital or at home right away were newer friends. Friends that I have known forever and I visited at the hospital when they had their babies didn't come to see the twins until they were almost 2 months old. And the same goes for family, except that's even worst, they are supposed to be there for the twins, but couldn't be bothered.

D bought me an awesome gift when I had the babies. So sweet my husband. My in laws sent me a girl and boy flower bouquet. And my sweet mom bought me such a cute flower arrangement too. My cousin Andre, who is more like a brother to me, came to see us at the hospital right away and gave us beautiful flowers too. My friend Maryellen did awesome, she brought champagne to the hospital! Yeah!

Mario has really adjusted well to the babies. Only the first day he was bit jealous, after that he seems to be kind of afraid of the babies and doesn't really go near them. D and I are not giving him nearly as much attention as we used to. Poor dog. In the weeks following the twins birth he was always at the vet. He developed some serious skin issues. I found lumps on his neck, that was so scary, but it was just an infection that cleared up right away.

Sweet bambinos - 3 months!

Here they are:

And their stats:
Baby girl is 12 pounds 3 ounces and 23 3/4 inches long.
Baby boy is 11 pounds and 22 3/4 inches long.

They "talk" a lot now, they roll over, hold hands, they play with toys and are all around cute!

Finally picked a daycare for them to go. D and I visited a few and we really liked the curriculum (for babies, I know, ridiculous!) of the one they are attending. Plus as a mom (I still feel strange using that term) I got a good feeling from the people that work there, and the general atmosphere.

The Twins first Valentine's Day.

My sweet Valentines:

D and I bought a couple of gifts because it was their first Valentine's day and we wanted to make it extra special. D wrote the sweetest messages in their cards. I actually teared up when I read Samuel's card.

And this is warrior Isabel with her balloon! LOL.

My brother and his girlfriend spoil them so much, firstly with their love and attention, but they always make every holiday special for the twins.
